If we go through biggest grossers in India, Action genre will be standout. There will be a lot of action this weekend with two Big Action flicks releasing. Long awaited 3rd collaboration of Ajith Kumar and Siva, Vivegam will see light of day tomorrow. (That is why you are reading preview on Wednesday, stead of Thursday). Day next Fox Star Studio will be dropping their A Gentleman across Hindi hotpots.
On Thursday, Vivegam will be unleashed across 1230 locations (1440 screens) in India. This is widest release ever for an Ajith starrer in India. Internationally film will be played in 42 markets at 600 locations (850 screens). When film releases tomorrow, it will be chasing the Day One record in Tamil Nadu. Currently Kabali holds Day One record for Kollywood in Tamil Nadu at ₹19.13cr and India at ₹46.45cr. Though India record of Kabali is far cry but Tamil Nadu Day One is what everyone’s eyes are on. Before Kabali set that record, it was Ajith’s Vedalam which was biggest opener at ₹14.6cr. Back then also, Vedalam missed All India record held by Shankar’s I.
Industry estimates for film ranges from ₹18-22cr on Thursday in Tamil Nadu. Advance sales of film are phenomenal as like every other biggie, what makes difference is Tickets hike due to GST. We at Cinetrak, are expecting a close to record in Tamil Nadu. At All India level, film is expected to cross I’s long standing Non Rajini Day One. From there it will be important that how well film holds as price attached with film are humugunous. Film’s India theatrical rights are sold at ₹69cr, including ₹55cr for Tamil Nadu. To recover this amount, Ajith will have to out do his best Vedalam which earned ₹53cr Share across India. Economically, film is already in black for Producers with a record ₹119cr recovery from Theatrical and Ancillary sources.
Fox Star Studios’ A Gentleman is not that hotly awaited or sort of. Film had good promotional material but it hardly raised buzz meters. Fast Forward to Music which failed to make any noise for film. Film has a limited face value in name of Siddhartha Malhotra. When these three things don’t work it boils down to the WOM, which needs to work.
Last week release, Annabelle Creation has performed well in its opening week so far. Film was leading The Conjuring 2 till Sunday, but weekdays came bit lower. Going by the weekdays, film is looking at ₹10.5-11cr 2nd weekend which will take it towards that $10mn mark.
