The records for opening day and single day grosses have been shattered for Tamil films. Mersal raked in ₹33.8cr approx on 1320 screens across India. This beats Kabali’s ₹30.43cr from last year. However Kabali still holds record for Biggest opening for Kollywood film including Telugu and Hindi versions. This was only 2nd time when a Tamil film grossed in excess of ₹30cr in single day.
It is 2nd Biggest Opener in 2017 just behind Baahubali The Conclusion. Film managed to beat Bollywood biggies like Raees and Tubelight, though they had external factors against them.
Top 5 Openers of 2017 are as follow :
- Baahubali 2 : ₹132.8cr
- Mersal : ₹33.8cr
- Khaidi No 150 : ₹31.34cr
- Raees : ₹28.24cr
- Spyder : ₹28.1cr
Among other records set, it becomes first film to gross ₹20cr in Tamil Nadu grossing ₹23.9cr. Kabali was the previous best at ₹19.1cr and Mersal comfortably soared 26% above that. In Kerala film took biggest opening for Kollywood film grossing ₹4.65cr. Film missed Baahubali 2 by inches which could be accounted to a bit smaller release. In Karanatka film’s screening was interrupted at few places but couldn’t resist Non Rajini opening record of ₹4.2cr for film. Film had limited release up North but made full of it with Opening Day only behind Kabali.
In Overseas film has grossed $2.5mn (₹16.3cr) till Wednesday with Global gross at ₹50cr approx. This has been only 4th time when a South Indian a film grossed ₹50cr globally within a day of release.
Film scored Biggest ever Opening Day for an Indian film Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. In USA/Canada film grossed $625k approx including Tuesday Midnight Premiere. Australia, France and United Kingdom were record opener for Kollywood. Gulf numbers are sensational for Wednesday release with film scoring similar to Raees outside UAE.
Film has decent reports with audience and a big festive weekend ahead. From here on an extended weekend of ₹90-100cr is what film’s eye are set on. It has a solid chance to beat long lying record of Enthiran in Tamil Nadu and 1st Kollywood film to do ₹100cr in homestate. 2017 has been a downer so far, especially Kollywood with films failing and conflict on taxation issue. Such performance of Mersal is a big relief to industry.
