After starting the Wednesday with record ₹23.8cr, Mersal closed Thursday at ₹18.2cr in Tamil Nadu. Add up the two and you have a sensational cume of ₹42cr. That’s the biggest weekend ever for a single movie in state in just 2 days.
Kabali previously held the weekend record with ₹39.5cr while Baahubali 2 had grossed ₹37.55cr earlier this year. Mersal soared past them both with a gross beyond rosiest industry expectations.
Opening day of Mersal was pretty much on expected lines but second day is simply unimaginable. Film dropped mere 23.6% on its second day. To put that into perspective, normally biggies tend to drop 40-50% on day two. There are early morning and fan shows on Day 1 which inflates opening day collection. With such hold, second day was technically playing at similar rate of day 1 which itself was historic.
For further perspective, Baahubali 2 held the 2nd day record in Tamil Nadu with ₹11.45cr. Mersal managed to beat that number by 59%. 2nd Day numbers are more than Opening Day of every other film except Kabali.
Speaking of All India figures, film stands at ₹56.85cr in 2 days. At this rate it will cross ₹100cr mark by Saturday and if not by Sunday for sure. In Overseas film grossed an estimated $1.45mn on Thursday taking its cume par $3.9mn (₹25.5cr). By the time you are reading this article film has crossed ₹100cr globally on just 3rd day.
Among others Raja The Great is performing well in Telugu market, opening #2 in India on Wednesday. Secret Superstar opened at #3 India grossing ₹5cr Approx. Film basically relies on WOM which is said to be one of best in recent times. More details on these will be published tomorrow when we will have Golmaal Again numbers which has opened quite well.
