‘Golmaal Again’ Debuts With Over 100 Crores India, ‘Secret Superstar’ Reasonable.

Golmaal Again top lined the largest Diwali weekend ever, delivering 2017’s 2nd largest opening weekend and 13th largest of all-time. It became 14th Indian film to gross over ₹100 crores in its 1st weekend Andrew second for Ajay Devgan. Fellow new wide release, Secret Superstar didn’t fare quite as well as expected but decent to be least.

Debuting with an estimated ₹106 crores domestically from over 3600 screens, Golmaal Again is off to great start. It started behind Singham Returns on Friday but by weekend is ahead by couple of crores. Film is surely going to be year’s biggest grosser edging Raees ₹179.34cr. But where will it end?

Going by recent Diwali releases, they weren’t the leggiest of the lot for sure. Release frame of Golmaal Again is similar to that of Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Both of them made around 1.92× and 1.94× in Lifetime, of their three days figure. Going by these two Golmaal Again is looking at ₹204-206 crores finish. However reports of Golmaal Again are certainly better than the two we considered.

Now what we have if film achieve that figure apart from that we are going to see part 5 too. It will become biggest ever for Ajay Devgan beating Singham Returns’ ₹191 crores.

Internationally the film made $3.2mn, delivering a ₹126.5 crores worldwide, positioned 2nd behind Raees. Of that, it brought $975k in North America, $1.15mn in Middle East and $380k in Pakistan.

#3 is where we find Secret Superstar and compared to Golmaal Again things weren’t quite so rosy for it. The debut of an estimated ₹33 crores FSS is lowest ever for a film released on more than 1500 screens on Diwali. Comparing with similar films, Dear Zindagi did ₹45.1 crores while Piku managed ₹34 crores. Film by Sunday stands at ₹39 crores which is much lower than pre release expectations but decent. It will probably close at ₹70 crores which was what it should have done in its 1st Week.

Film grossed $2.4mn in Overseas playing at 1090 locations. Numbers are okay for the sort of film it is but for the release it got are simply poor. Post Dangal, film is expected to release and do well in China and there’s where we enter in complete different space.
