A Mersal Diwali at Indian Box Office.

When Mersal released on Wednesday it was expected to break some records. Not to be surprised film did break them, but no one imagined the way it did. Mersal was #2 film of Diwali weekend, during which Top 5 grossed ₹208 crores FSS. Over the 5 Days collection were in excess of ₹285 crores, making it Biggest Diwali weekend ever.

Destined to be biggest Kollywood film (Tamil only) in India, Mersal blasted off with ₹104.05 crores till Sunday. This is enough to make it Biggest Kollywood film of 2017 edging Vivegam ₹87.66cr quite handsomely. Mersal is 2nd Vijay starrer and only 6th Kollywood film to gross ₹100cr in India with other 4 featuring Rajini or Shankar. It is now 3rd Biggest grosser ever in Tamil Nadu, only behind Baahubali 2 and Endhiran. If considered Kollywood, only one left is Endhiran which will be crossed by Thursday. Similarly in Kerala, it is already 5th Biggest Kollywood grosser ever and will reach 2nd by end of next weekend.

Internationally it bring another $8.35mn over 5 days weekend, for a global total of ₹158.53 crores. Mersal is 2nd Vijay starrer to gross ₹150 crores after Theri. Apart from them, only 7 other South Indian films have crossed ₹150cr Globally. The other 7 are Sivaji, Endhiran, I, Baahubali The Beginning, Kabali, Khaidi No 150 and Baahubali The Conclusion.

Mersal was able to outscore Bollywood Diwali releases in all major markets in overseas. It was #1 film in Malaysia, Singapore, Srilanka, Oman and Qatar while #2 in UAE, Kuwait and Baharain. In Singapore and Sri Lanka film managed Biggest opening ever for an Indian film while may achieve in Malaysia when final numbers come. It is 2nd Biggest ever opener in Europe for Indian films behind The Lunchbox. Mersal will soon cross $10mn in Overseas which is crossed by only Baahubali, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan this year.

Following is the region wise breakdown of film’s overseas collection.
  • North America : $1.45mn
  • Middle East : $1.95mn
  • Asia : $3.12mn
  • Europe and Africa : $1.5mn
  • Oceania : $335k

In #4, Raja The Great has fared quite well in Telugu Hotspots. Film grossed ₹31.13 crores (₹15.8 crores FSS) in India with good trend over the weekend. In India film will be profitable venture for the investors.

Last few months had been downer for Indian cinema but October is turning things lively. There are few other exciting films lined up in next 2 months which can end the year on respectable note.
