No major release and box office dwindled, registring the 3rd lowest weekend of this quarter. It was IT show at global Box Office this weekend and so was in India. Film was #1 film in India, though in same range of two holdovers and a new release. Shubh Mangal Savdhan held its back quite well, jumping from #3 last weekend to #2. Overall Top 5 grossed ₹44cr, down 56% from last weekend.
IT blew balloons worth ₹9.66cr ($1.5mn) in India in its opening weekend. This was the Biggest 1st weekend for a Non Sequel Horror Hollywood film besting Annabelle’s ₹7.85cr. However film hasn’t performed that well as it has performed in its Domestic market. Perhaps that wasn’t even expected from film and Horror films aren’t that big in India either. Film has favourable reports from audiences, will be interesting to see whether it can out gross The Conjuring’s ₹23cr.
Shubh Mangal Savdhan fell only 45% from last weekend for a weekend of ₹9.5cr. Film has now grossed ₹39.74cr in 10 days. Film grossed another ₹1.4cr on Monday becoming 2nd Biggest Ayushmann Khurrana film in India. With $1.1mn overseas, film global gross stands at ₹47cr and will close at ₹60cr approx.
Sunny Deol’s Poster Boy and Arjun Rampal’s Daddy were two new releases and both sinking at box office. Former was #3 with ₹9.1cr while latter managed only ₹5.74cr. Baadshaho crashed by 82% in its 2nd weekend taking its cume at ₹78.55cr. With mere $2.3mn from overseas, film will just about cross ₹100cr gross at end of run globally.
In other news this weekend, Annabelle Creation became 2nd Hollywood Horror film to gross $10mn in India. Film after 24 days of release stands at ₹64.5cr in India just behind The Conjuring 2. Vivegam ₹115.6cr, crossed Bairavaa’s global gross of ₹115.47cr becoming Biggest Kollywood film globally in 2017.
