Iss Diwali Logic Nahi Magic Chalega, this was the tagline of Golmaal Again and that’s probably what happened. Best day of year for Box office and Golmaal Again made full of it. Golmaal Again delivered ₹36.75cr on its opening day, quite easily becoming Biggest Bollywood Opener this year. Mersal continued its record breaking trend and managed to stay above Secret Superstar.
First of all let’s begin with Golmaal Again. 4th film in Golmaal series was expected to open well. Did it? Well it exceed those expectations and that’s quite rare this year. Numbers are 2nd biggest for Ajay Devgn, behind Singham Returns’ ₹42.92cr. What’s makes it better is user score of 4 out of 5 on BookMyShow which is brilliant for a big comedy film. From here on a weekend of ₹90cr is what we expect. Then the target will be to outgross lifetime business of Singham Returns i.e. ₹191.64cr. It will be Monday which will tell where the film will go.
Film had screening issues, thanks to lazy distribution but it batted above all. Although screening of film has been increased on Day 2 and will be further increased on Monday but business lost on Friday coated it few records for sure.
Internationally film grossed $1.2mn till Friday which includes $475k from Gulf and $250k from North America. Numbers are Biggest ever for Ajay Devgn starrer, heading for $3.5mn weekend.
Moving on to Mersal, it grossed another ₹16cr on Friday, taking its 3 days cume at ₹72.4cr. 3 days number are biggest ever for any Tamil film with decent margin of 15%. Though Kabali still holds record for Kollywood including Telugu and Hindi version.
Internationally film stands at $5.5mn (₹35.60cr) till Friday. It is already biggest Kollywood film in overseas this year beating Vivegam $5.14mn. Film crossed ₹100cr globally on Friday becoming 5th Vijay starrer to do so and most for any South Indian actor. From here film is certainly eying ₹200cr globally which is only achieved by Rajinikanth and Baahubali films in South India.
Secret Superstar has done decent business till date but quite underwhelming. Film was released on a big note to it’s potential but that didn’t paid off. It grossed ₹11.4cr on Friday on 1700 screens. Numbers are less than day one of Dear Zindagi which did ₹11.91cr on its Opening Day. Though film is commercially safe with in house release but a lot more was expected.
Internationally film was dull in traditional market set despite having a release of Tentpole films. Film grossed $1mn so far in these markets. Among 1st for Indian cinema, it was released simultaneously in Turkey after success of Dangal. Aamir Khan went to Turkey for film promotion and it will be on Monday that how well it paid off. There is a release scheduled in China where film can earn a heavy amount.
Telugu film Raja The Great debuted at #2 on Wednesday and managed #4 on Friday. It grossed ₹5.96cr on Friday taking its cume at ₹21.17cr. Film is yet another winner for Tollywood this year.
